Red Shadow
graphite, pastel on wood, 40"H x 30"W, 2022
part of continuing series whose point of departure is skylights. these drawings are on wood with the grain incorporated in the dynamic of the drawing.
Who can say what sparks the point of departure for a body of work?
For me, it has been landscape, still life, and many years ago, the figure. Currently, I am entranced by skylights and the dance of the ever changing patterns of light and shadow they create. The motion of pencil marks, along with the pattern of the wood the skylights are drawn on give energy and movement to the drawings. Beyond that, I am now looking at mycelium. The skylight series are on wood, the mycelium on paper.
From transcendent to mundane, my work is another point of view.
I have been a practicing artist for over 35 years. My point of departure has often been landscape, the natural world, and travel.
Currently, I have been looking at skylights and mycelium in large drawing format both on paper and on wood. I have worked with metal, and produced a number of 3-d paintings in steel and have worked on large outdoor dinosaurs of a whimsical nature.
I have had residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and at the Banff Art Center in Alberta, Canada before moving to Seattle in 1988.
